The Summer Pause

On setting the glass down for a minute

I haven’t published an article in over a month. A cardinal sin against most “rules” of social strategy.

And you know what?

It’s perfectly fine.

And even more importantly, that’s messaging I’m hearing from other entrepreneurs and content creators. We are all just doing our best, juggling a never-ending list of priorities.

In my case, not only was I busy with the day-to-day operations of my business, but I also needed a little downtime. I had lost not only inspiration but motivation. After helping a client with a large annual fundraiser, I needed to pull back to the essentials and actually rest.

Today’s modern social media culture makes this pressure feel almost unbearable.

There’s a constant need to do more. To always be present. To always have something interesting to say. Couple that with AI and the barrage of slop it has enabled to flow out into the world and that pressure feels compounded. AI theoretically could take over content creation on my behalf, but it wouldn’t be authentically me.

And I believe in showing up authentically. And sometimes that means hitting pause and taking a break until you can actually be present. Until you actually have something to say.

By taking a step back, I actually sat down and wrote three pieces in three days. I found the inspiration to start publishing again. I set aside my usual wine-content plan to start something more personal instead.

And as a marketer, it also helped me start thinking creatively on behalf of my clients again.

So this is my advice to everyone: take your time, and don't feel guilty about it — that's the hard part. Wine doesn't rush to be ready. Neither should you.

Enjoyed this one? I write about wine, marketing, and the space in between — subscribe on Substack to get it in your inbox. And if you're a winery ready to grow through smarter marketing, I'd love to talk.
